I get really annoyed when a someone sends a mass email to a bunch of people inviting them to a social function, and everyone uses the “reply-all” feature to basically chatter about nothing of real importance. Most of the time, I don’t even know the person. I don’t care to receive an email from someone I don’t know saying “haha, that sounds cool, by the way, I got new shoes!” I don’t care to receive twenty “I’m coming’s” for an event I’m not even organizing. RSVP’s are meant to be received by the person organizing the event, not the guests. This is Rule #14 of Email Etiquette:
14. Do not overuse Reply to All.
Only use Reply to All if you really need your message to be seen by each person who received the original message.
This is why when I send an email to a large group, I use the “BCC” field. I don’t trust anyone to remember this rule. Sadly, I slipped up earlier this week and included everyone in “CC” instead of “BCC,” and two people violated Rule #14. Grrr.
Also, if you’re on a formal email list, it’s really not necessary to have a back and forth conversation between yourself and another person discussing the logistics of meeting at each other’s house when no one on the list is involved. That is the time to take that conversation offlist.
