Last night, my roommate and I watched the Reagan burial at Simi Valley on the news.
You know what? Despite what I thought of Ronald Reagan’s performance as President, he was a man, and he had a wife that he loved very much, and she loved him too. This post isn’t going to be about Reagan and the atrocious things he did while he was in office. For a minute, I’d just like to forget who the person actually was, and talk about two regular human beings who were devoted to each other. Regardless of who those people are – when they have love between them, it is … so many words I can’t find right now.
It was very sad watching Nancy Reagan touch his coffin for the last time. She stood there clutching the folded flag from his coffin, one hand patting and stroking his coffin. She wasn’t connected with a microphone, so no one could hear what she was saying. but I could read her lips on the television screen. She said:
“Good bye, Ronnie. I love you.”
And some other things, as well, but I feel like I shouldn’t post them here.
She didn’t want to take her hand off his coffin. She finally kissed his coffin, held the flag close to her, and walked away.
I actually got choked up watching her.
We should all be so lucky to find that kind of love in our lifetimes.
